Position Summary:
We are looking for a professional, organized, efficient Nurse Manager for our Manhattan site. The successful candidate will provide professional nursing care for Apicha Community Health Center patients, adhering to established clinical standards and practices. The purpose of this position is to manage team of nursing staff including medical assistants and Phlebotomists, to provide nursing care to patients of all ages, gender, cultures, and background; provide physical and psycho-social support to patients and their significant others; welcome and create an inclusive environment for LGBTQ patients; support and guide members of the clinical team. As a member of the management staff, participate in the planning and development of the Nursing Department and work collaboratively with medical providers and all other members of the multidisciplinary team in managing care for a population of patients.
The major duties of the position include, but are not limited to:
Staff Supervision
- Supervises members of nursing team including RNs, LPNs, Medical Assistants and Phlebotomists
- Provides initial onboarding, privileging and training for RN, LPNs, Medical Assistants, and Phlebotomists.
- Work collaboratively with Nurse Manager in other sites as a team.
- Provide coverage as needed for both sites.
- Evaluate the performance of team members as requested for performance appraisals.
- Manage paid time off and team scheduling to ensure adequate nursing team coverage for the clinic.
- Provide ongoing supervision and training to nursing team including Medical Assistants.
- Provide annual appraisal and progressive disciplinary actions including oral/written/final counseling notices to staff as needed
Direct Care
Provide coverage of nursing team work as needed. Following list are some examples of nursing teamwork.
- Assesses patients’ physical and psychosocial needs including pain assessment, allergies and objective data.
- Administers prescribed medications, immunizations and treatments when needed.
- Nursing visits and patient education as needed, provides basic education and information to patients and caregivers, focusing on self-care appropriate to their age and identified learning, considerations and needs.
- Triages urgent patient care requests (phone, walk-in, portal communication) as needed.
- Promotes wellness and healthy behaviors through education with patients and caregivers.
- Responds and remains calm during emergency situations, directs the nursing team effectively and professionally during peak periods of activity.
- Provides seminars and in-house trainings on addressing patient and care giver health care concerns, infection prevention and health care maintenance.
Administrative
- Reviews resumes, screens applicants, participates in and conducts interviews for nursing team.
- Coordinates supplies and staff for off-site screening and testing events.
- Functions as Vaccine Coordinator for the Vaccine for Children Program
- Reports positive communicable disease results including COVID results to regulatory agencies.
- Monitors abnormal and critical lab values, follows up with lab provider for TNPs (test not performed).
- Serves as liaison between lab provider and Apicha to troubleshoot TNP and other lab errors.
- Coordinates and responds to CODE BLUE calls in the health center, documentation of the CODE BLUE.
- Is part of De-escalation team responding to Code Gray notifications
- Tracks utilization of 340B medication administered in the clinic
Evaluation of Care
- Evaluates the effectiveness of the care given by interdisciplinary care team and communicates findings to the nursing team,
- Conducts regularly scheduled meetings with the RNs and LPNs, and weekly meetings with Medical Assistants, as well as individual supervision as needed.
Maintenance of Clinic Equipment and Supplies
- Anticipates and oversees preparation of examination rooms with equipment and supplies required for visits. Assists providers with examination and procedures as requested.
- Assesses inventory for the clinic and orders supplies, vaccines and other equipment as needed.
Compliance
- Maintains reports of patients’ medical histories, and adheres with protocols, rules and regulations to maintain complete medical records.
- Maintains hygienic and safe working environment in compliance with healthcare standards and procedures.
- Coordinates Infection Control efforts.
- Conducts initial and annual N95 mask fitting for staff
- Acts in a professional manner, reflecting the mission of Apicha Community Health Center, demonstrating compliance with all policies, procedures and federal/state regulations as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
- Adheres to patient confidentiality and Apicha corporate compliance policy.
- Ensures exam and phlebotomy rooms comply with applicable regulations.
- Implements maintenance and interpretation of nursing practice standards.
Collaboration
- Assists with population management by identifying patients lacking the following: preventive health screenings; recommended periodic testing; follow-up appointments (lost to follow-up); treatment or follow-up for actionable test results.
- Creates and implements patient standing orders in collaboration with medical providers.
- Collaborates with Clinic Operation and other departments to ensure high quality and efficient care.
- Collaborates with HR and other administrative office for employee safety.
QI/QA/Risk Management
- Implements procedures to improve the quality of service and maintain patient flow efficiency.
- Participates in performance improvement activities and supports strategies for improved operations and the provision of excellence in patient care.
- Implements procedure to ensure staff and patients’ safety.
Skills Development
- Participates in ongoing trainings in cultural competency with special consideration including but not limited to underserved populations and the LGBTQ people across the age continuum.
- Maintains nursing competence through participation in continuing professional education and the appropriate learning experience.
Qualifications:
- Must have a current Registered Nurse License in New York State.
- Bachelor of Nursing Degree preferred or Associate degree in nursing with a minimum of 2 years supervisory or management experience.
- At least 2 years’ experience with medical surgical unit and/or pediatric or adult triage.
- Must have the ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
- Computer literate, experience with EMR, preferably with eClinicalWorks (eCW)
- Working knowledge of Zoom, Outlook, Teams
- Bilingual is a plus (English plus Spanish or South Asian or East Asian or Southeast Asian).
- BLS certification required.
- Ability to work both independently and cooperatively in a team relationship to meet the objectives of the department.
- Ability to take multiple stairs.
